At Christmas time I was gifted not 1, but 2 bottles of really nice tequila (score). I’m not a huge drinker, but I definitely love a good cocktail…or 2…after a busy work week, or during a celebration, or maybe just on a Wednesday. However, I’m fully aware that my days of being 22 and being able to run a marathon the day after I have some drinks is out the window, along with a lot of my metabolism. One thing I’ll always remember my father telling me in my college years is that those headaches are really bad from all the sugary stuff I’m mixing with some drinks. Now, that’s not to say multiple drinks aren’t the reason either…#college, am I right?
With that said, I have tried to be a lot more conscious about what I drink when I do decide to let loose. Specifically, what can I go for that’s not going to leave me in this sugar-daze the next day. So to not put these beautiful tequila’s to waste, I have found a few go-to drinks to whip up that don’t leave me feeling crappy the next day, and are also very tasty.
Here is what I suggest:
Tequila and fresh lime juice —call it a spin on the classic margarita, but using fresh lime juice instead of all that sour mix and such helps cut down on the sugar like crazy.
Tequila and grapefruit seltzer — great way to keep that bittery taste of grapefruit but with a lot less sugar. Another option: club soda and a splash of grapefruit juice.
Tequila and sparkling water + a splash of orange juice — the screwdriver is a tequila staple, so this is that…just a little different. Instead of the tequila drowning in the OJ, it’s primarily sparkling water but that splash of orange juice gives you that traditional screwdriver taste.
Tequila and sugar free sweetener (primarily chocolate I have used) —alright so this one sounds weird but hear me out, it’s a great ‘dessert’ drink on a cold night. The tequila warms you up, and that sugar free chocolate syrup or vanilla syrup gives you that adult hot chocolate. Yes this isn’t the “healthiest” on this list, but it’s still way better option than that mudslide that probably quadruples in calories and sugar.
I hope some of these might be nice suggestions for you to try, and allows you to splurge on that cocktail just enough for you treat yourself without the guilt or headache the next day. Of course knowing your limits is best, and never drink and drive! I would love to hear if there are other cocktail suggestions out there for those still wanting to ‘woo hoo’ now and then, but with a healthy conscious of course :)
