December Pet of the Month - Pequenin!

December 5, 2021 Kelly Wanamaker

I was curious about what type of riding is available for those in Costa Rica, and came across Caribe Horse Riding Club in Puerto Viejo. They offer different horseback riding tours yes, but what was most awesome about this place was they rescue so many horses from the most awful scenarios. I encourage you to take a look at their site to see all the horses they have helped, but Pequenin (a Criollo) is one and has a very emotional backstory.

Pequenin was actually supposed to be sacrificed - I know, horrible right? He lived in place full of intense abuse, from both people and different animals. When Caribe Horse rescued him, it was difficult at first to break all the bad habits built into Pequenin’s brain — he was defensive, scared, and very territorial. With lots of time and patience, Caribe Horse has shown Pequenin what it is to be loved and cared for, and over time he is slowly becoming more receptive and accepting of this love.

I love Pequenin’s story because it shows that animals truly form to their surroundings — both in good and bad ways. But it is important not to give up on those that may have been put in a bad place; it’s not their fault. Give them love, give them time, and give them the tools to grow and succeed and they will flourish. I love reading about the work this place has done: please take a look here!
