OK so I know kombucha has been around for quite some time, but I was little late to the game here. I wasn’t really interested in it to be honest — I heard some good things, but then I figured it was just one of these phases like gauche pants or something and the coolness of it would eventually wear away. Then I had some a couple years ago and I’ve got to be honest, I really wasn’t that blown away. Yea it tasted pretty good, and yea I know it’s a healthier choice then a soda or something, but I wasn’t convinced of anything yet.
Then I started consistently drinking some more. And more. And that’s when things started to change for me.
I was feeling more naturally energized.
I wasn’t getting sick as much.
I had a happy tummy.
When I noticed these things were really happening to me, and it wasn’t just a gaucho pants phase, I took a deeper look into what this kombucha was doing to. I have some type of autoimmune disease — it’s been a lot of years to really properly diagnose anything certain, but my doctors most closely relate it to lupus. I am anemic, I get tired a lot, my immune system can be crap, I get a lot of joint pain, it’s just not fun. Here’s how kombucha was helping me:
It has several species of lactic-acid bacteria which may have probiotic function — ultimately, it helps your gut! The kombucha’s SCOBY (basically bacteria and yeast blob) is used to ferment it — the fermentation is basically producing that acid that is providing that probiotic like benefit. Gut health for anybody - especially those with an autoimmune disease - is the root of everything, so keeping it happy changed my health for the better tremendously
Provides similar benefits of green tea — which is what was giving me that extra natural boost of energy
Antioxidants! Enough said there, everybody wants them
Helped reduce blood pressure; this I know really happened, even if it was a slow process and not tremendously, it definitely helped lower my BP when it would spike due to stress or being sick
There are so many good kombucha options out there you can get from the store, but I know you’ll want to do some research before just picking any (make sure they are keeping it as natural and organic as possible). I highly suggest making it at home if you can too — this I’m not an expert in, but would like to try. It does take time and some space, but “to be continued” on this for me as maybe I’ll actually get to trying it sometime in 2022.
I had this amazing organic and raw kombucha when in Costa Rica recently, check it out here!
So even though this may still be looked at as a “fad” or just another popular phase, I am a true fan and believer in the kombucha. Give it a try and you may just surprise your body!
